# Abandoned Actions

Send an automatic recovery email when a visitor enters an email address but doesn't submit your Action Page. Set up Abandoned Actions in the Page Builder.

**Abandoned Actions** sends a follow-up email when a visitor enters an email address on your Action Page but doesn't submit. The email reminds them to come back and finish, with a link to the page. You'll find it in the Page Builder under **Workflows > Abandoned Actions**. Abandoned Actions is available on Donation Pages, Event Pages, and Lead Pages. This article covers how to turn on recovery emails and write the message.

## Before You Begin

* To save changes, you need **Action Pages: Edit permissions**.

## Turn On Recovery Emails

To turn on recovery emails:

1. Go to **Action Pages > Pages**.
2. Click the name of the page you want to edit.
3. Select **Workflows > Abandoned Actions**.
4. Check **Enable recovery emails**.
5. Review the message and update it as needed.
6. Click **Save**.

When you check **Enable recovery emails**, the message fills in with a starter body and link text for your page type, and a starter subject if the subject is empty. You can use the message as is or make it your own. Checking the box again later replaces the body and link text with the starter message, so turn recovery emails on before you customize the message.

You can also open Abandoned Actions from **Workflows > Donor journey**. Once recovery emails are on, the Donor journey shows how many minutes after abandonment the email goes out.

Anedot doesn't send a recovery email to anyone who has submitted on your account in the last 30 days.

## Reuse a Recovery Message

Use the **Preset** field to reuse a recovery message you've already saved, or save the fields below as a new preset. To learn more, see [Presets in the Page Builder](/action-pages/page-builder/presets-in-the-page-builder.md).

## Write the Message

In **Message content**, set the following:

* **Preset name:** A name for this recovery message, so you can find it later.
* **Subject:** The email subject line. Required.
* **Body:** Explain why the visitor should return and finish. Required. You can use these variables: `{{account_name}}` and `{{first_name}}`.
* **Link text:** The text of the link back to your page. Required.
* **Contact delay:** How long after the visitor leaves to send the email: **30 minutes**, **1 hour**, **3 hours**, **1 day**, **2 days**, or **3 days**. The default is 1 hour.

### Starter Messages

| Page Type | Starter Body | Starter Link Text |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------- |
| Donation Pages | We noticed you started a gift but didn't finish. Complete your donation when you're ready. | Complete your donation |
| Event Pages | We noticed you started registering but didn't finish. Your spot isn't held until you check out. | Complete your registration |
| Lead Pages | We noticed you started signing up but didn't finish. Pick up where you left off. | Complete your signup |

The starter subject for every page type is "You left something behind."

When you're done, click **Save**.

## Set a Default Message for Lead Pages

On Lead Pages, while **Enable recovery emails** is on, the panel shows a **Default recovery message for lead pages** checkbox. Check it to make this message your account's default recovery message, then click **Save**.

* Your account can have one default message. Saving a new default replaces the old one.
* A page's own recovery message always takes priority. The default is used only when a page with recovery emails turned on has no message selected.

## Turn Off Recovery Emails

To stop sending recovery emails from a page, uncheck **Enable recovery emails**, then click **Save**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/action-pages/page-builder/abandoned-actions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
