# Failed Donation Attempt

Help a donor fix a declined donation payment on a one-time form: retry after a card decline, match CVV and billing ZIP, and clear bank fraud or security holds.

{% hint style="info" %}
This article covers a **one-time** donation payment that was declined or failed on a form. If a **recurring** gift failed to process, see My recurring gift failed — update payment.
{% endhint %}

When a donation payment is declined, the charge does not complete. Use this page to fix a declined payment and try again. The same steps help if you are helping a donor whose card or bank payment was declined.

After you submit a donation, a Confirmation Page may show that your charge is pending while your bank or card issuer reviews it. If it succeeds, you receive an email receipt. If the payment is declined or fails, you receive an email notification—select **Try again** in that email to return to the form and submit a new attempt.

### Common Reasons a Donation Payment Is Declined

#### Security code or billing details did not match (CVV/AVS)

The 3- or 4-digit security code (CVV/CVC) or billing ZIP/postal code may not match what your bank has on file.

**What to try:**

* Carefully re-enter card number, expiration date, CVV/CVC, and billing ZIP/postal code.
* If it still fails, contact your bank to confirm the billing address on file.

#### Bank authorization or fraud checks

Your bank may decline a gift that looks unusual (larger amount, international transaction, or a new organization).

**What to try:**

* Call the number on the back of your card and ask about the declined transaction.
* Share the amount and organization, then try again after they approve it.

#### Card type or card settings

Anedot supports most major card brands (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), but some cards or settings may still block the donation—for example, purchase-type restrictions, or international/online-purchase blocks.

**What to try:**

* Try a different card, if available.
* Ask your issuer whether online and charitable transactions are allowed.

#### Security alerts on your account

Your bank may place a temporary hold that blocks donations.

**What to try:**

* Ask your bank whether there is a security alert or hold.
* After it is cleared, try again.

#### Browser, network, or VPN issues

A temporary browser or network issue—or a VPN—can block the request.

**What to try:**

* Refresh the page, or close and reopen your browser.
* Try a different browser or device.
* Turn off any VPN or ad-blocking extensions, then resubmit.

That helps us review the declined attempt and suggest next steps.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/donor-support/faq/failed-donation-attempt.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
