# My Recurring Gift Failed — Update Payment

If a scheduled recurring gift could not process, update your payment method so the next charge can succeed. This guide is written for donors.

If a scheduled recurring gift could not process, update your payment method so the next charge can succeed.

This article is for **recurring** gifts. For a one-time donation that failed on the form, see [Failed Donation Attempt](/donor-support/faq/failed-donation-attempt.md).

## Before You Begin

* Check your email for a notice that the gift failed to process. That message may include a link to update payment.
* Or sign in to the Donor Portal at <https://donor.anedot.com/support>.

You can also open the portal from a recurring gift receipt. At the bottom, select **Update Payment Method** or **Update Commitment Details**.

## Update Your Payment Method

1. From the main menu, select **Recurring Gifts**.
2. Select the gift that failed.
3. Scroll to **Payment Method**.
4. Click **Replace Payment Method**.
5. Enter your new card or bank account information.
6. Confirm the billing ZIP code matches the ZIP on file with your bank.
7. Click **Save Payment Method**.

For amount, billing address, cancel, or reactivate steps, see [Manage Recurring Gifts](/donor-support/manage-giving/manage-recurring-gifts.md).

## If Your Bank Declined the Charge

Many failures are declines from your bank or card issuer (insufficient funds, fraud review, mismatched billing ZIP, or purchase restrictions).

* Confirm billing ZIP and card or account details, then replace the payment method if needed.
* Call the number on your card or statement, ask about the declined charge, and allow charitable or online transactions if they were blocked.
* After your bank clears the issue, the organization may retry the gift, or you can confirm the next withdrawal date in **Recurring Gifts**.

## Still Need Help?

* Contact the organization that receives your gift if you need them to send a new payment update link or update payment on your behalf.
* Email <help@anedot.com> if you cannot access the Donor Portal or the payment update still fails after your bank confirms the method should work. Include your name, the organization, approximate amount, and last 4 digits of the payment method.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/donor-support/faq/my-recurring-gift-failed-update-payment.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
