# Commitments

Manage recurring gifts and future pledges in Finance > Commitments. Edit a commitment, update the payment method, send an update link, deactivate, or export.

**Commitments** lists your donors' recurring gifts and future-dated pledges. Go to **Finance > Commitments** to find a commitment, view its schedule, edit it, update the payment method, send the donor a payment update link, deactivate or activate it, and export your commitments.

## Before You Begin

Your role needs these permissions, found under **Finance** in [Permission Sets](/settings/access/permission-sets.md):

* **Commitments: View permissions** to open **Finance > Commitments**.
* **Commitments: Edit permissions** to edit, deactivate, or activate a commitment, update its payment method, or send a payment update link.
* **Commitments: Export permissions** to use **Export CSV**.

If your role is limited by access tags, you only see commitments from the Action Pages you can access.

## What You'll See in Commitments

* **Direct**, **Tandem**, and **Conduit** tabs: Commitments by how the gift was made. **Direct** opens by default.
* **Columns:** **Donor**, **Amount**, **Frequency**, **Status**, **Next charge**, **Last updated**, **Created at**, and **Actions**.
* **Statuses:** **Active** (charging on schedule), **Retrying** (a charge failed and Anedot is retrying it), and **Inactive** (not charging).
* **Last updated:** When the commitment last changed, including automatic charges and retries. Hover over it to see the date.

An inactive commitment shows an info icon next to its status. Hover over it to see why it was deactivated.

### Future Pledges

A future-dated gift, such as one scheduled in [Terminal](/finance/internal-processing/terminal.md) or a future pledge, is a one-time commitment. It charges on its date and then becomes inactive. You can edit or deactivate it before it's charged.

## Find a Commitment

To filter commitments:

1. Go to **Finance > Commitments**.
2. Click **Filters**.
3. Choose your filters. You can filter by status, payment method, date, frequency, contact, and amount.
4. Click **Apply filters**.

## View a Commitment

To open a commitment:

1. Go to **Finance > Commitments**.
2. Click the eye icon (**View**) on the commitment's row.

The details show **Contact information**, **Employment**, and the **Commitment** section with **Page**, **Status**, **Amount**, **Frequency**, **Payment method**, **Next charge**, **Ending**, and **UID**. You'll also see the **Upcoming schedule**, the **Past schedule**, and any **Fund split** or **Custom fields**. Click the **Page** name to open the Action Page in a new tab.

## Edit a Commitment

1. Go to **Finance > Commitments**.
2. Click the pencil icon (**Edit**) on the commitment's row.
3. Update the donor's contact information, address, or employment.
4. Under **Schedule**, update the **Amount (USD)**, **Frequency**, or **End date**.
5. Click **Save**.

You'll see "Commitment updated." and the commitment shows your changes.

## Update the Payment Method

You can update the payment method for the donor, or send them a link to update it themselves.

To update the payment method for the donor:

1. Open the commitment.
2. Click the pencil icon next to **Payment method**. The **Update payment method** window opens.
3. Enter the donor's new card or bank account details.
4. Click **Save payment method**.

You'll see "Payment method updated." The new method is saved for future charges. Saving doesn't charge the donor now.

To send the donor a payment update link:

1. Open the commitment.
2. Click **Send payment update link**.

You'll see "Payment method update email sent." and the donor gets an email with a link to update their payment method.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Send payment update link** is unavailable when the commitment has no donor email. Add an email in **Edit commitment**, or update the payment method for the donor instead.
{% endhint %}

## Deactivate or Activate a Commitment

To deactivate a commitment:

1. Open the commitment.
2. Click **Deactivate**. The **Deactivate commitment** window opens.
3. Under **Reason for deactivation**, choose **Pledge Unintended**, **No Longer Interested**, **Financial**, **Constituent Deceased**, or **Other**. If you choose **Other**, enter an **Other reason**.
4. Click **Deactivate** to confirm.

You'll see "Commitment deactivated." and the status changes to **Inactive**. If the commitment has an email, the donor is notified. Users who get recurring donation cancellation emails are also notified.

To activate an inactive commitment:

1. Open the commitment.
2. Click **Activate**.

You'll see "Commitment activated." and the status changes to **Active**.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Check **Next charge** before you activate a commitment. If that date has already passed, the donor may be charged on the next daily run.
{% endhint %}

## Export Commitments

To export commitments:

1. Go to **Finance > Commitments**.
2. (Optional) Filter the list. The export uses your current filters.
3. Click **Export CSV**.

You'll see "Commitments export started." When the file is ready, you'll see "Commitments export is ready. Choose a file from Downloads." To stop an export, click **Cancel export**.

For commitments that are retrying, the CSV also includes **Retries Remaining**, **Next Retry On**, **Last Retried**, and **Last Failure Reason**.

* **Does updating the payment method charge the donor?**\
  No. The new method is saved for future charges.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/finance/management-and-reporting/commitments.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
