# Permission Sets

Create custom Permission Sets in Settings > Access > Roles to control what each user can view, edit, and export in your Anedot account, then assign them.

A **Permission Set** (shown on the **Roles** tab in Settings) is a group of permissions that controls what a user can view, edit, and export in your fundraising account. Every user has exactly one. You manage Permission Sets in **Settings > Access > Roles**. This article covers the available permissions, how to create, edit, and delete a custom permission set, and how to assign one to a user.

## Before You Begin

* Anyone on the account can view the Roles page.
* To create, edit, or delete permission sets, you need **Account Management: Edit Account Details and Configuration** permissions.
* To assign a permission set to a user, you need **Access Management: Edit Users** permissions. You can only assign permission sets that don't give more access than your own.
* The built-in **Owner**, **Super Admin**, **Admin**, and **Standard** permission sets are marked **Managed by Anedot** and can't be edited. See [Users](/settings/access/users.md) for what each includes.

## Common Use Cases

| Use case             | Typical approach                                                                                              |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Page editors | Action Pages: View and Edit. Leave Finance and Billing Agreements off. |
| Finance only | Finance: View, Edit, and Export for transactions and commitments. Leave Action Pages: Edit off. |
| Consultant or vendor | Only the Action Pages or Billing Agreements permissions their work needs. Remove the user when the work ends. |
| Fundraising manager | Action Pages and Relationships permissions. Leave Edit Bank Accounts and Edit Users off. |
| Team-based roles | Pair a permission set with [Teams](/settings/access/teams.md) to limit which Action Pages a user sees. |

## Create A Permission Set

To create a permission set:

1. Go to **Settings > Access > Roles**.
2. Click **New role**.
3. Enter a **Role name**. Each name must be unique in your account.
4. (Optional) Under **Copy permissions from**, choose an existing permission set to start from.
5. Turn on the permissions you need. Use **Search permissions** to find one quickly.
6. Click **Create role**.

The new permission set appears in the Roles list and can be assigned to users.

{% hint style="info" %}
To clone Action Pages, users need **Billing Agreements: View** permissions, because cloning copies a page's Billing Agreements. See [Billing Agreements](/settings/finance/billing-agreements.md).
{% endhint %}

## Edit Or Delete a Permission Set

To edit or delete a permission set:

1. Go to **Settings > Access > Roles**.
2. Click the permission set.
3. Change its name or permissions, then click **Save role**. To delete it instead, click **Delete role**, then confirm.

Changes apply to every user who has that permission set. You can delete a permission set only when no users have it. Move those users to another permission set first.

## Assign A Permission Set

To assign a permission set:

1. Go to [**Settings > Access > Users**](/settings/access/users.md).
2. Click the user's name.
3. Under **Role assignment**, choose the permission set.
4. Click **Save**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/settings/access/permission-sets.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
