# State Restrictions

Block donations from specific U.S. states in Settings > Finance > State Restrictions, and learn what donors see when they enter an address in a blocked state.

**State Restrictions** let you block donations from donors in specific U.S. states, for example when your organization isn't registered to fundraise there. You manage them in **Settings > Finance > State Restrictions**. This article covers how restrictions work and how to turn them on or off.

## Before You Begin

* To save state restrictions, you need **Account Management: Edit Account Details and Configuration** permissions.

Anedot does not provide compliance advice. Check with your compliance officer or the state regulator to decide which states to restrict.
{% endhint %}

## How State Restrictions Work

* Restrictions apply to every Donation Page and Event Page on your account. They don't apply to Lead Pages.
* When a donor enters an address in a restricted state, they see "We're sorry, but we can't process donations from your state." and can't complete the donation.
* Restrictions are checked against the state in the donor's address. If a page doesn't collect an address, the restriction can't be checked.

## Turn On State Restrictions

To restrict a state:

1. Go to **Settings > Finance > State Restrictions**.
2. Turn on the toggle next to each state you want to block. The state shows "Donations from this location are blocked."
3. Click **Save Restrictions**.

The restricted states are listed under **Restricted jurisdictions**. To allow donations from a state again, turn its toggle off and click **Save Restrictions**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.anedot.com/settings/finance/state-restrictions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
